Passing drill
Halfback Pass Grid
Build volume on the clearing pass off both hands with constant movement.
- Time
- 15 minutes
- Players
- 4 to 8 players
- Intensity
- Medium
- Equipment
- Ball, cones
- Space
- 8m x 8m grid
- Positions
- Halfbacks, forwards
Setup
An 8m x 8m grid with a player at each corner, one or two balls.
How to run it
- Place the ball behind one player, who sets their right foot beside it and throws a halfback pass anti-clockwise to the next corner.
- Each receiver places the ball on the ground in front of them, and the passer runs to that ball and passes on to the next corner.
- After three passes, throw a diagonal pass across the grid and return to your starting corner, then the last receiver begins the sequence again.
- Run it for 4 minutes anti-clockwise, then reverse direction to work the other hand.
- Pass in front of the receivers, never at them.
Coaching cues
- Passing right, your right foot points at the target
- Pass in front of them, not at them
- Bend at the knees, not the waist
Common mistakes
- Foot not rotated outwards, so the hips stay square and your hand catches your knee
- Only ever running it one way, so one hand never develops
