Passing drill
Miss Pass Line
Develop the long cut-out pass and the discipline of the man being missed.
- Time
- 15 minutes
- Players
- 5 to 10 players
- Intensity
- Medium
- Equipment
- Ball, cones
- Space
- 15m x 50m channel
- Positions
- Backs
Setup
A 15m wide channel down the pitch, five players in a line one pass-length apart, one ball.
How to run it
- Player A throws a cut-out pass missing player B and hitting player C.
- C then passes short back inside to B, who throws a cut-out to D, who passes back inside to C, and so on down the line and back again.
- Everyone receiving must accelerate onto the ball so the players behind stay onside, and everybody runs straight for the whole drill rather than drifting sideways.
- Critically, the player being missed must still put their hands up and look like they are receiving it - that is what holds the defender and makes the pass work.
- Run it for 6 lengths, rotating positions each time.
Coaching cues
- The player being missed puts their hands up anyway
- Accelerate onto the ball so everyone stays onside
- Run straight - no drifting
Common mistakes
- Drifting sideways instead of running straight, which shuts down the space you just created
- The missed player standing flat and not selling the dummy, so the defender reads it
