Kicking drill
Drop Kick with Target
Build a reliable drop kick for both drop goals and restarts.
- Time
- 25 minutes
- Players
- 1 to 6 players
- Intensity
- Medium
- Equipment
- Ball, goal posts
- Space
- 22m from the posts
- Positions
- Fly-halves, fullbacks
Setup
Goal posts for the drop-goal work; for the restart work you only need the halfway and 10m lines. Five balls, no tee.
How to run it
- The drop is everything: hold the ball so that when dropped it bounces up in exactly the same alignment, with your arms fully extended and elbows straight, and drop it a hip's width from your non-kicking foot.
- Turn your non-kicking shoulder towards the target, cock your leg, step onto your non-kicking foot with the instep line at the target, then contact the bone on top of your instep into the lower part of the ball with your toes pointing forwards and upwards.
- For a drop goal strike it almost the instant it touches down; for a high restart let it bounce higher.
- Do 5 kicks each from directly in front at 22m, from 15m out either side, and from the 15m lines.
Coaching cues
- Arms fully extended, elbows straight
- Drop it a hip's width from your standing foot
- Low kick - strike it close to the ground; high kick - let it bounce
Common mistakes
- Dropping from bent arms close to your body, so the ball tumbles and the bounce is unpredictable
- Hesitating on a drop goal and letting the ball rotate off alignment
