Setup
Any marked pitch with a touchline, 22m line and halfway line. Five to eight balls. Excellent solo economics - every ball goes out of play and stops.
How to run it
- Start on your own 10m line, 10-15m in from the touchline.
- The kick must bounce inside the opposition 22 and then cross the touchline; if it goes out on the full it is worth zero, because you have just handed them the lineout where you kicked from.
- The kick you need is a low driven spiral with a long first bounce and a shallow angle to touch, not a high hanging ball.
- Work three bands of 6 balls: from your own 10m line, from halfway, and from your own 22 to their 10m as a straight touch-finder.
- Also practise kicking to the far touchline - the tactic is to pull the defence one way and kick the other.
Coaching cues
- Bounce it inside the 22, don't reach touch in the air
- Toe down, hip forward
- Low and driven, not high and hanging
Common mistakes
- Going out on the full, which concedes the lineout at the point of kicking
- Not knowing the exclusions - it doesn't count if a tackle, ruck or maul happened in your half, if an opponent touched it in your half, or at any restart
