    Box Kick with Live Chaser

Add the pressure and the chase that a solo box kick can never give you.

    Positions
    Halfbacks, wings, fullbacks

    Setup

A 10m square marked with cones in the 5-15m channel, 22-25m downfield. Kicker starts 2-15m from touch behind a marked ruck. A stopwatch and three balls.

    How to run it

    1. Stage one is simply kicking into the square with your partner catching and returning - 10 kicks.
    2. Stage two adds live pressure: your partner alternates between being a static defender you must clear and being a chaser you must land the ball on top of, 10 kicks each role.
    3. Stage three lays out three squares at different depths and your partner calls the target square immediately before you pick, forcing a real-time decision - 12 kicks mixing the chip, the low bouncing kick and the standard box.
    4. Time every rep and both of you should be able to state the hang time.
    5. If your chaser cannot get there, the kick was too long.

    Coaching cues

    • Pick, step and strike is one motion, not three
    • Shoulders parallel to the near touchline
    • If the chaser can't get there, it was too long

    Common mistakes

    • Getting charged down because the pick, step and strike became three separate movements
    • Chasing distance - beyond 30m the kicking side wins the ball less than half the time
