Kicking drill
Aerial Noughts and Crosses
Train kick selection, accuracy, contested catching and chase decisions all at once, competitively.
- Time
- 25 minutes
- Players
- 2 to 12 players
- Intensity
- Medium
- Equipment
- Ball, cones
- Space
- Two 30m squares, 10m apart
- Positions
- All positions
Setup
Two 30m squares each divided into nine 10m x 10m squares, with a 10m buffer zone between them. Multiple balls and bibs or cones to mark the squares.
How to run it
- Nominate a target square out loud and kick into your opponents' grid; in the first game the square is marked regardless of whether it lands, is caught or missed, and you play until one team makes three in a line.
- In the second game the square is only marked if the ball lands, drops or is missed, so a clean catch now negates the score.
- In the third game add a player per team who may chase and catch, and mark the square if their own chaser catches it.
- Encourage varied kick heights, trajectories and spin, and keep multiple balls ready because dead time kills this game.
- Play best of three games.
Coaching cues
- Call the target square before you kick
- Vary the trajectory - the same kick every time gets caught
- Multiple balls ready, keep it moving
Common mistakes
- Kicking the same flat punt every time, which the opposition simply catches
- Not calling the square first, which turns it into random kicking with no accuracy demand
