    Setup

Open grass with a 30m run-up, cones marking a regather zone 12-15m ahead. Two or three balls.

    How to run it

    1. Hold the ball vertically across your chest with both hands, then drop it by simply removing the supporting hand while your kicking leg comes up, applying minimal force.
    2. The instant it leaves your foot, sprint after it - the chip is not a kick, it is a kick-and-chase and the two are inseparable.
    3. Execute it at pace, chipping on your third or fourth stride without breaking stride, and regather on the full or off the first bounce.
    4. Progress from regathering on the bounce, to on the full, to chipping while turning off either shoulder.
    5. Do 4 sets of 8 with a full sprint on every rep.

    Coaching cues

    • Drop it, don't throw it
    • Minimal force - chips fail from being over-hit
    • Run onto the ball, don't wait under it

    Common mistakes

    • Over-hitting it into an unrecoverable up-and-under
    • Stopping to kick, which telegraphs it and gives the defence time to drop back
