Match Fitness drill
Rugby Contact Circuit
Condition the wrestle, drive and get-up qualities that no amount of running will build.
- Time
- 25 minutes
- Players
- 2 to 24 players
- Intensity
- High
- Equipment
- Contact pad, partner, ball
- Space
- 20m x 20m box
- Positions
- All positions
Setup
A 20m box, a partner, one contact pad and a ball.
How to run it
- Work through four stations in pairs, swapping roles at each so your partner's work interval is your recovery.
- Maul Ball - you crouch over a ball protecting it for 15 seconds while your partner tries to rip it out; Forward Drive - your partner holds the pad and you drive it back 5m, four drives of 5 seconds with 10 seconds between; Get Up - you start face down while your partner stands over you and you fight to your feet for 15 seconds; Tackle Shuttle - you start face down 3m from the pad, get up and make four tackles.
- Complete 3 to 5 full circuits, once or twice a week.
- Keep a neutral spine and drive from your legs on every contact station, because this is a conditioning circuit and not a live collision session.
Coaching cues
- Body position before intensity
- Your partner's work is your rest - don't rest twice
- Drive from the legs, spine neutral
Common mistakes
- Turning the wrestle stations into full-intensity live contact, which sharply raises injury risk for no extra benefit
- Resting through your partner's turn as well as your own, which halves the stimulus
