Decision Making drill
Them Us Ball Scanning
Build the habit of scanning continuously, which is what separates good decision-makers.
- Time
- 20 minutes
- Players
- 6 to 12 players
- Intensity
- Medium
- Equipment
- Ball, cones
- Space
- 30m x 20m channel
- Positions
- All positions
Setup
Three cones marked A, B and C with a ball at each, plus attackers and defenders in a channel. Six to ten players.
How to run it
- Someone calls go plus a cone letter, and the attackers move to it while discussing which way they will attack on the way, with the last attackers scanning for second-line support space.
- Defenders fill accordingly.
- The scanning order is fixed and you say it in your head continuously: look at THEM, look at US, know where the BALL is.
- In the multi-phase version, every player must call out loud the name of the opponent opposite them and the team-mate inside them, and count the outside players, before each phase.
- Freeze the play at random moments and question each other - where are your team-mates, where is the ball, what is your next decision.
Coaching cues
- Them, then us, then the ball - in that order, continuously
- Call the opponent opposite you out loud
- Freeze and question - that's where the learning is
Common mistakes
- Only scanning when the ball is far away, then going head-down when it arrives
- Silence - if nobody is talking, nobody is scanning
