Breakdown drill
First Man at the Ruck
Win the race to the contact area and clear the threat rather than just arriving.
- Time
- 20 minutes
- Players
- 3 to 9 players
- Intensity
- High
- Equipment
- Ball
- Space
- 10m x 10m
- Positions
- Forwards, back row
Setup
Two attackers facing one defender, one ball, and an optional tackle bag for the progression. Three players minimum.
How to run it
- The first attacker takes the ball into contact and the defender makes a low chop tackle.
- The first attacker presents long.
- The second attacker's job is to win the race to the contact area, enter through the gate, bind, and drive the tackler backwards past the ball - clearing the threat, not simply sealing over it and leaving a live jackal on the ball.
- Rotate all three roles every rep, 12 reps per cycle across 3 cycles.
- Progress by adding a second defender holding a bag so the clearer must remove one man and stay on their feet against a second contact.
Coaching cues
- Win the race to the contact area
- Through the gate, every time
- Remove the threat - don't just seal over it
Common mistakes
- Arriving and sealing over without removing the jackal, so the threat is still on the ball
- Entering from the side because it was the shorter route - you must join from behind your offside line
