Breakdown drill
Counter Ruck Unit
Turn the ball over by driving over the ruck as a connected unit.
- Time
- 20 minutes
- Players
- 6 to 10 players
- Intensity
- High
- Equipment
- Tackle bag, ball, cones
- Space
- 15m x 15m
- Positions
- Forwards, locks, back row
Setup
Tackle bags in a line with cones creating running routes around them, one ball, two teams of three lying face-down behind the bags.
How to run it
- On the whistle both teams move to contest the ruck.
- The blue team goes straight over the bag, but only the first red player may go straight - the other two must run around the cones first, which deliberately puts red at a positional disadvantage they have to overcome with technique and unit drive.
- Drive low to high, focusing on driving the opposition through and past the ruck, and nominate one caller so the counter goes as a unit rather than as individuals.
- Six contests per side per round, 4 rounds, swapping which team is disadvantaged.
Coaching cues
- Low to high, drive them through and past the ball
- One caller - counter-rucking only works as a unit
- Eyes open, get hold before you drive
Common mistakes
- Counter-rucking as individuals, when it only works with the whole unit arriving together
- Joining from the side in the scramble - the offside line runs through the hindmost foot of any participant
