Max Velocity drill
Flying 20
Develop and hold genuine top-end speed, which is where line breaks are finished.
- Time
- 30 minutes
- Players
- 1 to 4 players
- Intensity
- High
- Equipment
- Cones
- Space
- 40m straight line
- Positions
- All positions
Setup
Three cones on flat grass: cone A at 0m, cone B at 20m, cone C at 40m.
How to run it
- From cone A, build your speed up smoothly across the 20m to cone B - do not explode off the line, roll into it so you arrive at cone B already at nearly top speed.
- From cone B to cone C, hold maximum speed while staying tall, relaxed and rhythmic; you are not trying to accelerate here, you are trying to hold.
- Run 5-10m past cone C before easing off, and never slow down inside the zone.
- Walk all the way back and rest 4-6 minutes, then repeat - 4 reps total.
Coaching cues
- Tall, relaxed, rhythmic
- Arrive at top speed, don't chase it
- Loose jaw, loose hands
Common mistakes
- Treating the build-up as a sprint so you're already fading entering the fast zone
- Tensing up and 'trying harder', which actually makes you slower
