Footwork drill
Evading the Player
Beat a defender inside a channel that forces you to step rather than run around.
- Time
- 20 minutes
- Players
- 2 to 8 players
- Intensity
- High
- Equipment
- Ball, cones
- Space
- 22m x 15m
- Positions
- Wings, fullbacks, centres, back row
Setup
A 22m x 15m grid using the pitch markings. The defender stands somewhere on the 15m line; the attacker starts outside the 22 with the ball.
How to run it
- The attacker must beat the defender while staying inside the 15m channel, and the defender's job is to pin them between themselves and the touchline, which forces the inside step.
- Declare before you start whether it is touch or tackle.
- Vary what you use every rep - pace, step, swerve, fend, even a chip - because a predictable single option is the fault this drill exists to expose.
- Do 6-8 reps each side of the field then swap roles.
- Add cones on the arc if you want to judge the quality of a swerve.
Coaching cues
- Defender pins you to the touchline - that's what forces the step
- Vary the option every rep
- Stay inside the channel, don't just run around it
Common mistakes
- Using the same option every time, so the defender reads you instantly
- Drifting sideways and running out of channel rather than attacking forward
